Futurists, Electricity, Algorithms, and Extended Spectralism

Edgar Varèse Ionization

I really enjoyed the use of percussion in the piece. I felt that the piece truly embodied Varese’s description of the music as organized sound. With the use of percussion he was limited as a composer to only rhythms and form which I felt was an interesting choice for the piece and brought out what he was trying to convey to the piece.

Emmanuel Pahud Density 21.5

The piece was written for a solo flute. I felt that Pahud did a great job of employing the full range of the flute. The piece was atonal and had a variety of small and large leaps. One thing I really liked was the melodic theme that reoccurred throughout the piece.
